Quand Janet a pris sa retraite, sa routine et ses objectifs habituels lui manquaient. Comme elle voulait rester active, intellectuellement et physiquement, elle a communiqué avec les services communautaires et d’aide à la famille de l’Armée du Salut à Toronto, pour offrir ses services comme bénévole.
Deux jours par semaine, Janet donne un coup de main partout où on a besoin d’elle. Vous pouvez la voir en train de défendre un sans-abri, d’organiser et de distribuer de la nourriture à la banque alimentaire, ou d’écouter les problèmes de personnes qui ont des troubles de santé.
« Aider les autres me procure beaucoup de satisfaction, raconte Janet. Les gens sont tellement reconnaissants. Je suis heureuse quand quelqu’un me dit « Merci, j’ai trouvé un logement » ou « Je me sens mieux maintenant que j’ai suffisamment de nourriture pour la semaine. »

Patricia travaille à temps plein dans le monde des affaires, mais tous les lundis, elle consacre son après-midi et sa soirée à préparer et à servir un repas à des personnes à faible revenu ou sans abri, dans le cadre du programme Feed the Need de l’Armée du Salut, au centre-ville d’Halifax.
« Le bénévolat répond à mon désir de soutenir ma collectivité, explique Patricia. J’admets que je suis fatiguée à la fin de la journée, mais c’est une bonne fatigue. C’est une fatigue qui me donne un sentiment de contentement de soi, d’avoir contribué à donner un peu de chaleur humaine à certains membres de ma collectivité.

Tom a travaillé à titre d’entrepreneur dans les jours qui ont suivi les événements du 11 septembre 2001, et il a dû faire face aux horribles réalités liées à la guerre.
