Du 1er au 5 juillet 2015, plus de 15 000 salutistes et amis de l’Armée du Salut – dont 1 000 venant du Canada – se réuniront à Londres (Royaume-Uni) dans le cadre du congrès Sans Frontières, afin de célébrer 150 années consacrées à procurer de l’aide et de l’espoir aux démunis du monde entier.

L’Armée du Salut a entrepris son œuvre en 1865, lorsque William Booth, ministre du culte londonien, a abandonné le concept conventionnel de l’église et renoncé au confort de sa chaire pour porter son message d’espoir aux pauvres, aux sans-abri, aux affamés et aux indigents.

En 1867, l’Armée du Salut était devenue une organisation qui offrait une formation scolaire de base, des salles de lecture, des caisses d’épargne, des soupes populaires et de l’aide d’urgence aux démunis.

Aujourd’hui, l’Armée du Salut est à l’œuvre dans 126 pays, et sa mission consiste à répondre aux besoins essentiels des gens sans discrimination, à exercer une influence transformatrice et à défendre la dignité de tous les êtres humains.

L’Armée du Salut au Canada

L’Armée du Salut s’est implantée au Canada en 1882. Elle est devenue depuis le fournisseur de services sociaux de première ligne le plus important au pays, après le gouvernement.

Les programmes et les services de l’Armée du Salut sont offerts dans 400 collectivités, et profitent chaque année à 1,8 million de personnes.
