Le poste de l’Armée du Salut de Kitchener, en Ontario, organise une collecte de manteaux d’hiver pour s’assurer que les habitants les plus vulnérables de la ville se sentent importants, et demeurent bien au chaud et en bonne santé pendant la saison froide. L’an dernier, cette activité a permis de recueillir 8 000 manteaux.

« Dès que la collecte de manteaux neufs et légèrement usagés est terminée, les gens sont invités à se rendre à notre centre pour faire leur choix », dit Bob Dockeray, travailleur social au bureau des services communautaires et d’aide à la famille de l’Armée du Salut. « Nous avons entendu de nombreux récits de personnes qui, faute d’avoir suffisamment d’argent pour se procurer un manteau d’hiver, portaient uniquement des t-shirts et des pulls minces quand les températures chutaient sous le point de congélation. C’est triste et épouvantable. »

Certaines entités de l’Armée collaborent avec des partenaires communautaires pour offrir chaleur et réconfort aux plus démunis. À Calgary, l’organisation des Stampeders s’associe de nouveau à l’Armée du Salut en demandant aux mordus de football d’apporter des manteaux d’hiver neufs ou légèrement usagés au stade lors du match du 31 octobre. En 2014, les amateurs ont donné 4 600 manteaux, un record!

À Belleville, en Ontario, les donateurs sont invités à aller porter des manteaux d’hiver légèrement usagés dans les nettoyeurs Parson’s Cleaners, Northtown Cleaners ou CDL Cleaners. Ces partenaires se chargeront de les nettoyer de manière professionnelle tout à fait gratuitement.

« Nous remercions chacun des collaborateurs qui nous aident à garder les membres de notre collectivité bien au chaud », dit Abby Mills, directrice des services communautaires et d’aide à la famille de l’Armée du Salut de Belleville. « Nos clients sont tellement reconnaissants. De plus, ce geste, à la fois simple et vital, contribue à les garder en santé toute l’année. »

Selon nos prévisions, la demande sera encore grande cette année. L’Armée du Salut tient donc à remercier tous ceux et celles qui, grâce à leur générosité, feront en sorte que toutes les personnes qui ont besoin d’un manteau chaud en recevront un cet hiver.
