« J’ai cru que je mourrais toxicomane », déclare Samantha. « Pendant près de 25 ans, j’ai aimé l’effet que les drogues me procuraient. Puis, un jour, je suis tombée au plus bas. »

En janvier 2014, Samantha a commis un crime et a été incarcérée. Aux prises avec la toxicomanie et un sentiment de vide existentiel et de désespoir, elle souhaitait ardemment améliorer sa vie. « La toxicomanie m’a tout enlevé : ma famille, mon fils, mon honnêteté et mon intégrité, souligne-t-elle. Je voulais changer tout cela, et pour y parvenir, je savais que ce serait avec l’aide de l’Armée du Salut. »

En janvier 2015, Samantha s’est présentée à la Belkin House de l’Armée du Salut, située en plein cœur de Vancouver. L’établissement est doté de ce qu’il y a mieux dans son domaine d’activité, et offre des services d’hébergement aux personnes sans abri ou à risque d’itinérance. Grâce à différents programmes offerts en établissement, des gens ordinaires réalisent quotidiennement des exploits extraordinaires à la Belkin House.

« Les exploits varient d’une personne à l’autre », signale Terri Thompson, directrice des programmes. « Il peut s’agir de trouver un emploi ou un endroit où vivre, de retourner aux études ou d’apprendre à être responsable, comme se lever le matin ou respecter des rendez-vous. »

« Nous voulons que les clients de la Belkin House sachent qu’ils seront appréciés et qu’ils découvriront de nouvelles possibilités d’apporter des changements bénéfiques dans leur vie. »

Aujourd’hui, Samantha suit des cours pour devenir conseillère en toxicomanie. Elle travaille à temps partiel et considère toujours que l’Armée du Salut est un autre chez-soi pour elle : le foyer qu’elle n’a jamais eu et dont elle avait si désespérément besoin.

« L’Armée du Salut ne m’a jamais laissé tomber. Je suis sobre depuis deux ans. J’aime sincèrement ma nouvelle vie! », conclut Samantha.
