Le samedi 1er décembre 2018, quelque 16 000 Canadiens prendront part à la Course du Père Noël, qui comprend le 5 km du Père Noël et la Marche des lutins (1 km), une activité familiale organisée annuellement par l’Armée du Salut afin de recueillir des fonds pour financer ses services et ses programmes, notamment la distribution de denrées alimentaires et de vêtements, des services d’hébergement et des programmes de dynamique de la vie.

En participant à la Course du Père Noël, dans le cadre d’un partenariat entre le Coin des Coureurs et l’Armée du Salut, vous contribuez à transformer la vie de membres de votre collectivité, comme celle d’Anita.

 

À l’âge de 15 ans, Anita et sa famille ont fui la Sierra Leone et se sont installées au Canada. Même s’ils y ont trouvé la paix et la sécurité, des défis de taille les attendaient. En Sierra Leone, Anita a travaillé dur pour permettre à sa famille de joindre les deux bouts, et elle n’a jamais fréquenté l’école. Arrivée au Canada, elle était incapable de compter, d’épeler son nom ou de réciter l’alphabet. Tout était ardu.

Au Canada, Anita a quitté l’école avant la fin de ses études secondaires, ainsi que le foyer familial. Elle a éventuellement fondé une famille et déménagé d’Edmonton à Ottawa pour être plus près de membres de sa famille. C’est là qu’elle a connu la maison Bethany de l’Armée du Salut, qui offre du soutien aux jeunes familles.

« J’ai suivi des cours sur le rôle parental, appris à cuisiner des plats nutritifs et abordables pour mes enfants et me suis inscrite au programme Learning Coach, qui permet à de jeunes parents de poursuivre leurs études, dit Anita. Mon professeur m’a dit : « Tu peux le faire ». Grâce à lui, je développe mon estime de soi, je progresse dans mon éducation et j’améliore mon anglais.

« L’Armée du Salut se préoccupe d’aider les gens. Ici, on ne s’attarde pas sur le passé, mais on nous aide à bâtir notre avenir. On nous accueille à bras ouverts, et ça fait du bien. »

À propos de la Course du Père Noël

La Course du Père Noël a vu le jour il y a 28 ans, à Edmonton (Alberta). En 2001, la portée de l’activité s’est étendue dans le reste du pays. Aujourd’hui, la Course du Père Noël se tient simultanément dans 38 villes canadiennes. L’an dernier, quelque 16 000 participants ont recueilli environ 650 000 $, afin d’aider l’Armée du Salut à fournir de la nourriture et des vêtements à des personnes dans le besoin, et de favoriser leur autonomie, non seulement à Noël, mais tout au long de l’année.
