« Je m’en souviens parfaitement bien. C’était le 19 décembre 2008. J’étais en route pour aller chercher un panier de Noël et des jouets à l’Armée du Salut, à Vernon (C.-B.), raconte Marcus (prénom fictif). À une dizaine de minutes de chez moi, une voiture venant en sens inverse a traversé la ligne médiane et a percuté la mienne de plein fouet. J’ai survécu miraculeusement à l’accident. Ma grande préoccupation du moment était de pouvoir célébrer Noël avec mes enfants.

« L’année avait été difficile financièrement. En outre, j’avais eu le bras broyé dans un accident de travail. Malgré trois opérations, j’étais incapable d’accomplir mes tâches habituelles. J’avais épuisé mes congés de maladie et je parvenais à peine à payer mes factures et à nourrir ma famille. J’avais donc communiqué avec l’Armée du Salut qui m’avait procuré de la nourriture. C’était pénible de faire la file avec un de mes enfants qui me tenait la main. Je n’avais jamais demandé d’aide de ma vie.

« L’accident s’est produit sept jours avant Noël. J’ai subi une commotion cérébrale qui a laissé des séquelles : maux de tête violents, perte d’équilibre, problème d’élocution et sensibilité extrême à la lumière et au bruit. Je suis allé en convalescence chez ma sœur qui habitait dans la montagne où les routes enneigées rendaient les déplacements quasi impossibles. Je ne pouvais pas aller chercher mon panier de Noël. Tout ce que je voulais, c’était une dinde. Et je n’avais plus rien à offrir à mes enfants.

« Ma sœur a téléphoné à l’Armée du Salut pour expliquer ma situation. On lui a demandé son adresse et un membre de l’organisation est venu porter le panier de nourriture, malgré les routes sinueuses couvertes de neige et l’endroit difficile d’accès.

« L’Armée du Salut a dépassé toutes mes attentes. Encore aujourd’hui, j’ai les larmes aux yeux quand je pense à ce qu’ils ont fait. Mes enfants ont reçu des jouets et moi la dinde que je désirais.

« Grâce à l’Armée du Salut, mes enfants et moi avons passé un beau Noël. La compassion dont les membres de l’Armée du Salut ont fait preuve est difficile à expliquer. Quand je n’avais plus les idées claires, ils m’ont redonné espoir et remonté le moral.

« Aujourd’hui, ma situation financière s’est améliorée, et c’est à mon tour de redonner à la collectivité. J’ai eu la visite d’un ange et je veux offrir aux personnes démunies un Noël dont elles se souviendront. »
