Le 14 février dernier, à l’occasion de la Saint-Valentin, des bénévoles de l’Armée du Salut ont gracieusement distribué des foulards tricotés à la main à des personnes dans le besoin au centre-ville de Calgary.

« Ce fut une expérience enrichissante pour nous tous. Nous ne savions pas à quel point les besoins étaient grands », raconte Allison Patrick.

Allison et son groupe de bénévoles ont profité de l’occasion pour discuter avec des sans-abri qui vivaient dans la rue ou étaient hébergés dans des refuges ou des centres de jour.

« Au fil de nos rencontres, nous en avons appris un peu plus sur les gens et les circonstances qui les ont amenés là où ils sont, dit Allison. L’un d’eux vivait dans une tente constituée d’une bâche. Il nous a accueillies « chez lui », et nous a expliqué comment il se protégeait des éléments. Nous avons également discuté avec des toxicomanes et des personnes sans emploi, malades ou qui avaient vécu des ruptures de relation. »

Les bénévoles de CommuKNITy Cares ont distribué environ la moitié des 140 foulards, et accroché le reste à des clôtures pour quiconque en avait besoin.

CommuKNITy Cares est un groupe de tricoteuses dévouées et altruistes fondé en 2017 par Allison Patrick.

Outre les foulards, les membres du groupe, dont l’âge varie de 9 à 91 ans, tricotent des couvertures et des châles pour des malades de maisons de soins palliatifs et des mitaines qui se retrouveront dans des paniers de victuailles que l’Armée du Salut distribue à Noël.

« Nous formons un groupe de femmes qui avons de la dextérité et des objectifs. Nous utilisons nos talents pour tisser des liens avec les autres et leur faire savoir que nous nous soucions d’eux et qu’ils sont importants à nos yeux.

« Le bénévolat nous permet de combiner notre passion pour le tricot et notre amour du prochain, dit Allison. Les bénéficiaires me demandent souvent si nos produits sont tricotés à la main. Quand je leur dis que c’est le cas, ils les tiennent proches de leur cœur. Parfois, les gestes sont plus éloquents que les paroles. »
