Le jour du Souvenir a été instauré pour souligner le sacrifice des soldats qui sont tombés au champ d’honneur lors de la Première Guerre mondiale. De nos jours, il s’agit d’un hommage autant aux hommes et aux femmes qui portent l’uniforme qu’à ceux qui ont fait l’ultime sacrifice.
Chaque année, à l’occasion du jour du Souvenir, l’Armée du Salut ainsi que des centaines de Canadiens se rappellent les soldats qui ont servi et continuent de servir leur pays en temps de guerre, de conflit et de paix.
Le 11 novembre prochain, devant le monument commémoratif de guerre du Canada, à Ottawa, et les cénotaphes et les monuments aux morts du pays, des membres et des dirigeants de l’Armée du Salut déposeront des gerbes de fleurs pour commémorer les sacrifices consentis par les militaires canadiens pour protéger notre sécurité et nos libertés.
Pendant la Première et la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, et les années de guerre froide, l’Armée du Salut a procuré aux militaires canadiens en service outre-mer un peu de réconfort en servant des boissons chaudes et des collations, et en établissant des centres où les soldats pouvaient se reposer et se distraire. Au Canada, notre plus important effort de guerre a été de collaborer au rapatriement des militaires dans les années d’après-guerre.
L’Armée du Salut a également fourni des services d’hébergement aux vétérans sans abri, et plaidé en faveur de ceux aux prises avec des troubles de stress post-traumatique. Elle a également envoyé de petits cadeaux de Noël, des chaussettes par exemple, aux militaires canadiens basés au Canada et outre-mer, et pendant le reste de l’année, des cartes et des courriels.
En raison des conflits armés dont nous n’arrivons pas à entrevoir la fin, l’Armée du Salut continuera d’apporter de l’espoir aux remarquables vétérans et membres des forces armées qui ne cessent de se sacrifier pour assurer notre paix et notre liberté.
