Quelque 250 000 familles canadiennes sont touchées par les troubles du spectre de l’autisme. Contrairement aux autres jeunes, les jeunes autistes sont moins susceptibles de recevoir des appels de leurs amis ou d’être invités à participer à des activités.

Tous les vendredis soir, depuis 11 ans, le poste de l’Armée du Salut de Saint-Jérôme, au Québec, est l’hôte d’un café où les autistes peuvent développer leurs habiletés sociales, surmonter leurs problèmes d’anxiété et faire valoir leurs forces, leurs talents et leurs intérêts.

« Mon fils est atteint d’autisme, dit Frida Aoun, fondatrice du café. Il m’a donné l’idée de créer un lieu sûr où il pourrait être lui-même, discuter de ses problèmes, transmettre son savoir-faire et tisser des liens sociaux positifs. L’Armée du Salut m’a aidé à transformer ce rêve en réalité. »

Nancy Grégoire, une habituée du café, précise qu’à aucun moment, depuis la première fois où elle a mis les pieds au café, elle n’a regretté de l’avoir fréquenté.

« Le Café Planète Autissia propose aussi des sorties comme une randonnée au parc national Wilson Falls, dit Nancy. Une fois par année, nous organisons une activité de financement où je joue la comédie et chante. Je me suis découvert des talents insoupçonnés. »

Les personnes autistes ont parfois de la difficulté à décoder les interactions sociales, ce qui peut accentuer leur isolement et les condamner à la solitude. Chaque vendredi soir, une vingtaine d’adultes mangent ensemble, font des activités comme du karaoké et jouent à des jeux tels que le bingo.
