À Kilome, au Kenya, l’Armée du Salut a financé l’achat de 25 chèvres pour cinq collectivités rurales, soit quatre femelles et un mâle par village. Elles ont été remises aux tuteurs de jeunes orphelins vivant avec le VIH/sida. Toutefois, toute la collectivité profitera des bienfaits de ces biques.
« Notre objectif est que chacun des villages puisse être indépendant financièrement », dit Richard Bradbury, officier de projet à Nairobi, au Kenya. « Nous aimerions mettre sur pied ce projet d’élevage caprin dans six autres villages, une fois que la situation sera stable dans ces cinq agglomérations rurales. »
Les chèvres servent à la production laitière, afin que les enfants puissent profiter des bienfaits du lait de chèvre qui est facile à digérer, et dont la teneur en calcium et la richesse en vitamine sont plus élevées que celles du lait de vache. De plus, elles sont heureuses sur un petit lopin de terre et mangent cinq fois moins que les vaches.
Les revenus que touchent les habitants grâce aux chèvres sont substantiels : un litre de lait se vend 80 à 150 shillings kenyans, soit environ 2 $ CA. Les habitants peuvent aussi vendre du fumier ou l’utiliser sur leur ferme.
