Le temps de produire nos déclarations de revenus est arrivé, et pour les personnes à faible revenu les coûts liés à la production d’une déclaration de revenus sont une source de stress additionnelle. Dans le cadre d’une collaboration avec l’Agence du revenu du Canada, l’Armée du Salut offre un service gratuit de préparation des déclarations de revenus afin d’alléger le fardeau financier des Canadiens vivant dans la pauvreté.

Matt Saunders, comptable agréé, travaille bénévolement au comptoir de préparation des déclarations de revenus de l’Armée du Salut d’Oshawa depuis de nombreuses années. « Ce service gratuit est essentiel, explique-t-il. Si les gens n’ont pas les moyens de faire préparer leur déclaration de revenus, ils ne le feront pas eux-mêmes. En conséquence, ils peuvent perdre jusqu’à 100 $ par mois, car ils ne profitent pas du crédit pour la TPS, du crédit pour impôts fonciers ou de la prestation pour enfants. C’est une somme importante pour des gens qui ont de la difficulté à joindre les deux bouts. »

L’an dernier, grâce au travail de bénévoles du PCBMI (Programme communautaire des bénévoles en matière d’impôt) offert par les services communautaires et d’aide à la famille de l’Armée du Salut d’Edmonton, plus de cinq millions de dollars sont retournés dans les poches des particuliers à faible revenu.

« Le nombre de personnes qui utilisent notre service ne cesse d’augmenter », explique Cheryl Brown, coordonnatrice des bénévoles. « Pour un étudiant qui remplit une déclaration de revenus pour la première fois, pour un nouvel arrivant qui fait face à la barrière linguistique, ou pour une personne âgée qui n’a pas de connaissance en informatique, il s’agit d’un exercice stressant, et qui peut coûter cher s’il est exécuté par une autre personne. »

En 2015, 35 bénévoles ont préparé 3 146 déclarations de revenus. Depuis cinq ans, le comptoir d’Edmonton est ouvert une fois par semaine de mars à novembre, pour permettre aux particuliers de produire leurs déclarations de revenus des années précédentes.

« Cela fait chaud au cœur de voir le visage d’une personne s’illuminer en découvrant qu’elle recevra un crédit pour la TPS ou une prestation fiscale pour enfants, ou encore qu’elle peut demander un montant pour les frais payés pour le transport en commun, les ordonnances ou les études. Nous sommes heureux de leur donner un peu d’espoir », ajoute Cheryl.
