Pour les Canadiens qui vivent dans la pauvreté, produire une déclaration de revenus est une source de stress additionnelle. Le service gratuit de préparation de déclaration de revenus de l’Armée du Salut permet non seulement à des gens comme Carole et son fils, Troy, de produire une déclaration de revenus, mais aussi de sortir d’une situation difficile.
« Carole souffre de problèmes de santé et Troy est atteint de troubles mentaux », dit la capitaine Danette Woods, de Saint John, au Nouveau-Brunswick. « Sans ce service, ils ne rempliraient tout simplement pas leur déclaration de revenus et ne recevraient pas les prestations gouvernementales auxquelles ils ont droit. »
Le poste de l’Armée du Salut de Saint John est situé dans un quartier défavorisé où plus de 1000 personnes ont profité du PCBMI (Programme communautaire des bénévoles en matière d’impôt). Le PCBMI est une collaboration entre les organismes communautaires, comme l’Armée du Salut, et l’Agence du revenu du Canada (ARC).
« Parmi les personnes qui s’adressent à nous, certaines sont sans abri, vivent dans des logements inadéquats ou comptent sur des banques alimentaires pour manger. Elles n’ont pas les moyens de payer 80 $ pour faire préparer leur déclaration de revenus », indique Jerry, coordonnateur des bénévoles.
Selon lui, un grand nombre de bénéficiaires de ce service ignorent qu’ils ont droit à certains avantages fiscaux. Par le truchement de ce programme, ils découvrent qu’ils peuvent gagner des centaines de dollars en ne laissant pas filer des crédits et des allocations comme l’allocation canadienne pour enfants, la pension de Sécurité de vieillesse, le crédit d’impôt pour solidarité et le crédit pour la TPS/TVH.
« Je remercie l’Armée du Salut et ses partenaires pour ce service qui est très utile et qui m’a beaucoup aidé », dit Carole.
L’année dernière, l’Armée du Salut a aidé plus de 9500 personnes à préparer leur déclaration de revenus et leur budget.
