« Les mauvais souvenirs de l’incendie de forêt sont aussi frais dans la mémoire des habitants de Fort McMurray qu’il y a un an, dit le major Stephen Hibbs de l’Armée du Salut. Il reste encore beaucoup de plaies à guérir. »

En effet, il y a maintenant un an que cette ville du nord de l’Alberta a été ravagée par un incendie de forêt qui a forcé l’évacuation de quelque 90 000 résidents, détruit 2 500 maisons et immeubles et causé plus de dommages que toute autre catastrophe dans l’histoire canadienne.

« Lorsque l’incendie s’est déclaré, le 1er mai 2016, le personnel et l’équipe d’intervention d’urgence de l’Armée du Salut à Fort McMurray étaient en première ligne, et ont immédiatement commencé à distribuer de la nourriture et des boissons aux pompiers, raconte le major Hibbs. Nous y sommes restés jusqu’à ce que toute la ville soit évacuée, le 3 mai. »

L’ampleur de l’intervention du personnel des services d’urgence et d’aide aux sinistrés de l’Armée du Salut était colossale : 25 000 repas ont été servis, sept unités d’intervention d’urgence ont été déployées et 7 000 heures de travail ont été consacrées par des bénévoles de sept provinces et de deux territoires.

« Lorsque je songe à la catastrophe, je me rappelle la poussée d’adrénaline, la peur de mourir, l’intense chaleur du brasier, les maisons en flammes, la circulation paralysée, les enfants en larmes, en fait beaucoup de pleurs et de prières, mentionne le major Hibbs. Je m’en souviens comme si c’était hier. »

Le major souligne qu’un an après le désastre, l’Armée du Salut est toujours sur place afin d’offrir une aide concrète, des services de counseling et du réconfort aux personnes qui en ont besoin.

« Les gens disent qu’ils n’ont plus de nouvelles de Fort McMurray et présument que tout est rentré dans l’ordre. Mais ce n’est pas le cas, explique le major Hibbs. Plus de 15 000 personnes ne sont toujours pas revenues en ville, il y a eu plusieurs tentatives de suicide et les intervenants en counseling sont débordés. Cela en dit long.

« Mais l’espoir renaît à Fort McMurray. Après avoir reçu l’autorisation de retourner chez moi, j’ai aperçu un merle et un papillon posés sur une parcelle d’herbe intacte. Tout ce qui se trouvait autour était noirci, calciné ou en flammes. C’est alors que je me suis rappelé que l’espoir et la vie nouvelle peuvent rejaillir des cendres. »
