À 7 ans, Alyah a donné tout le contenu de son portemonnaie à un itinérant affamé de Toronto. Depuis, elle allège la souffrance des sans-abri et aide les plus démunis.

« Nous nous apprêtions à partir lorsque j’ai vu un itinérant qui tenait un petit écriteau sur lequel était écrit : “Donnez-moi un peu d’argent, s’il vous plaît. J’ai faim!”, raconte Alyah, qui est maintenant âgée de 11 ans. J’ai été surprise, car je ne savais pas qu’il y avait des gens qui vivaient dans la rue. »

Après avoir fait une découverte aussi surprenante, Alyah a commencé à poser une multitude de questions à sa mère au sujet de l’itinérance et des problèmes de la faim : « Pourquoi n’a-t-il pas de maison? Comment est-ce possible au Canada? Peut-il vivre avec nous? »

« Alyah estimait qu’elle devait faire quelque chose à cet égard », dit Melva, sa mère.

Pendant trois ans, Alyah, avec le soutien des membres de sa famille, a collecté des couvertures, des chapeaux et des moufles pour un refuge pour les sans-abri. En 2016, lorsqu’elle a constaté que certains de ses camarades de classe souffraient de la faim, elle a réorienté son action, ramassé des denrées, rempli la banquette arrière de la camionnette familiale et remis tout le fruit de ses efforts à l’Armée du Salut afin qu’elle distribue des vivres aux plus démunis. Elle a réussi, comme projet pour Noël 2017, à remplir la banquette arrière et la boîte de la camionnette de ses parents de denrées et d’articles de première nécessité comme du shampoing, des brosses à dents, des savonnettes et du désodorisant.

Ses efforts ont tellement ému la capitaine Karen Holland qu’elle en avait les larmes aux yeux.

« Alyah est un modèle de générosité, dit la capitaine Holland. Un grand nombre de personnes profiteront de son initiative. »

L’objectif d’Alyah pour 2018 est très simple : continuer à recueillir des articles et à aider les itinérants et les plus démunis. Elle espère que son projet prendra de l’expansion.
