Mars est le mois national du travail social. L’Armée du Salut profite donc de cette occasion pour souligner le dévouement, l’expertise et le travail assidu de ses nombreux intervenants. Leur exceptionnelle contribution permet à l’organisation de venir en aide à plus de 1,9 million de Canadiens.

Sidney Philip travaille comme intervenant en santé mentale pour les services correctionnels du centre Harbour Light de l’Armée du Salut, à Vancouver, depuis 2015. Il a obtenu sa maîtrise en service social en 1996.

« Nos clients proviennent du milieu carcéral et un grand nombre d’entre eux ont été emprisonnés pendant plusieurs années, raconte Sidney. Lorsqu’ils arrivent à la maison de transition de 0801l’Armée du Salut, ils présentent des troubles graves – dépression, isolement social, trouble de stress post-traumatique, agoraphobie. Un bon nombre de ces hommes n’ont ni soutien familial ni réseau social. Notre rôle est de contrer leur isolement en les aidant à se réinsérer dans la société. »

Sidney a choisi de faire carrière en travail social pour venir en aide aux personnes, qui, comme son père, étaient alcooliques.

« Je désire donner un coup de main à tous ceux qui ont un problème qui les empêche d’évoluer en société. Les clients n’abordent pas certains sujets plus délicats. Je désire être là pour les aider à combler le fossé. »

Sidney a parfait sa formation auprès de Service correctionnel Canada. « Le travail social est primordial dans la société d’aujourd’hui et un élément clé en santé mentale. Mon objectif est de faciliter l’intégration sociale de mes clients. Leur réussite me tient à cœur. »
