« Une jeune femme a mangé quatre bols de soupe, car son frigo était vide, explique Dave Jackson, un bénévole qui participe à ce ministère de la rue depuis 14 ans. Le jour suivant, un homme s’est mis à pleurer à chaudes larmes en recevant une nouvelle paire de gants. C’est une expérience très enrichissante de constater la reconnaissance des plus démunis de la société. »

Connue sous le nom de programme « Jack Frost », la cantine ambulante s’arrête au centre-ville où des bénévoles servent des repas chauds, des sandwiches et des boissons, et procurent à ceux qui en ont besoin des bottes, des tuques, des manteaux et des couvertures, tous les mercredis, de novembre à mars.

« Chaque soir, nous servons environ 85 personnes, dit Jan Keats, coordonnateur des services d’urgence et d’aide aux sinistrés. Qu’il s’agisse de sans-abri qui dorment sur des bancs de parc, d’aînés vivant avec un revenu fixe ou de personnes incapables de travailler en raison de troubles mentaux, l’Armée du Salut répond à leurs besoins essentiels.»

« Nos clients savent qu’ils peuvent compter sur nous, explique Dave.

« Même si le temps est mauvais ou que nous ne sommes pas en pleine forme, nous sommes là, dit Dave, car si l’Armée du Salut n’était pas présente, des gens n’auraient rien à manger, et cela pèse lourd sur nous. »

L’Armée du Salut offre non seulement de l’aide concrète, mais également une oreille attentive.

« En plus de fournir une aide pratique, nous tissons des liens avec nos clients et leur redonnons leur dignité, affirme Dave. Nous nous efforçons de les mettre à l’aise et d’instaurer un climat de confiance afin de les guider dans la bonne direction. À titre d’exemple, nous leur disons où ils pourront trouver un refuge pour la nuit, se faire couper les cheveux bon marché ou se procurer de nouveaux vêtements. Nous faisons de notre mieux pour rendre leur existence un peu plus facile. »
