La littératie financière, c’est posséder les compétences nécessaires pour prendre de bonnes décisions en matière de gestion des finances. Savoir tenir un budget peut faire toute la différence pour les personnes et les familles à faible revenu.

« S’informer, c’est se donner du pouvoir », explique Kenton Davis, responsable des services sociaux au centre d’hébergement Peel Family de l’Armée du Salut, à Mississauga (Ontario). « Nos ateliers sur la gestion des finances aident les gens à se remettre sur pied et à aller de l’avant. »

Tous les mois, des experts en gestion des finances provenant d’organismes comme Inspire Charity, Credit Canada et Consolidated Credit offrent gratuitement des conseils financiers aux personnes qui ont du mal à joindre les deux bouts. On leur apprend à magasiner judicieusement, à établir un budget et une cote de solvabilité, à réduire leurs dettes, etc.

« L’adoption de bonnes habitudes en matière de finances produit de bons résultats », admet M. Davis. Cela peut se traduire par un meilleur logement, le rétablissement de relations, l’amélioration de l’estime de soi et l’apprentissage de l’autonomie.

Le centre d’hébergement Peel de l’Armée du Salut est un endroit où les familles qui éprouvent des problèmes de logement trouvent de l’espoir. Pouvant accueillir 200 personnes, le centre propose un concept d’habitation de style hôtel, où les résidents et leurs enfants sont en sécurité. Ils reçoivent de l’aide pour trouver un logement ou un emploi, suivent des cours d’aptitudes à la vie quotidienne et sont aiguillés vers des ressources communautaires.

« Nous voulons que les gens tirent le meilleur parti de ce qu’ils ont, déclare M. Davis. Les ateliers sur la gestion des finances sont très appréciés, et les participants acquièrent des compétences indispensables à leur survie dans la société complexe d’aujourd’hui. La littératie financière est essentielle pour aider les gens à sortir de la pauvreté. »
