Quand des visions d’horreur envahissent Aubrey Francis, il pense aux aspects positifs de sa vie, à savoir sa foi et son engagement bénévole.

« Le jour du Souvenir est une journée particulièrement difficile pour moi », raconte ce vétéran de 47 ans qui souffre d’un état de stress post-traumatique (ESPT). « Pendant mon service dans les forces armées, j’ai été témoin de scènes troublantes. Il y avait tellement de haine. Je n’étais nullement préparé pour ça. Plusieurs de mes amis sont morts soit au combat soit parce qu’ils se sont enlevés la vie. »

Pendant une période de 20 ans, Aubrey a été affecté 11 fois à l’étranger. « À cette époque, j’ai passé plus de temps à l’extérieur du pays », ajoute-t-il.

Il a fait de grands sacrifices pour servir son pays et a longtemps caché sa colère, son chagrin, sa culpabilité et sa honte, car comment faire autrement quand on veut jouer les durs.

En 2008, Aubrey a reçu un diagnostic d’ESPT et quitté l’armée. Il a continué à avoir d’abominables cauchemars, s’est éloigné peu à peu de ses parents et de ses amis, et est devenu un bourreau de travail dans son petit camion de cuisine de rue. Mais peu importe ce qu’il faisait ou les thérapies qu’il suivait, les images du passé et les souvenirs douloureux continuaient de le hanter.

« Tu ne peux pas effacer les mauvais souvenirs », dit Aubrey.

Puis un jour, on lui a demandé d’agir en tant que chef bénévole au café Manna de l’Armée du Salut à Gananoque, en Ontario. Dans cet environnement de style bistro, tous ceux qui ont faim et de la difficulté à joindre les deux bouts peuvent se rassasier.

« Au café, chacun peut prendre une bouchée et faire un brin de jasette. Moi, j’y trouve du réconfort, une réelle motivation et un sentiment d’appartenance. »

« Redonner à la collectivité et faire quelque chose d’utile m’aident à gérer mon ESPT. Je m’assois souvent dans l’aire de repas pour partager mon expérience et donner un peu d’espoir. Quand je fais cela, je passe une bonne journée! »
