Bénévole à l’Armée du Salut depuis 28 ans, Dennis Miner apporte du réconfort aux itinérants et aux personnes démunies du centre-ville de Parry Sound. « Je n’agis pas par devoir, dit-il. Je le fais parce que j’aime ça. »
Le 8 janvier dernier, Jamie McGarvey, maire de Parry Sound, a remis à M. Miner, âgé de 75 ans, l’« Ordre de Parry Sound » en précisant que M. Miner était un modèle d’engagement, de dévouement et d’altruisme.
« M. Miner est membre de l’Armée du Salut depuis 1975. Il a joué un rôle actif et constructif dans un grand nombre de programmes, précise M. McGarvey. De plus, je sais que chaque semaine il sera là pour tendre la main aux plus vulnérables. »
Tous les vendredis soir, M. Miner et le véhicule d’urgence de l’Armée du Salut, un VR réaménagé, sont présents sur Main Street. M. Miner nourrit des enfants – parfois âgés d’à peine six ans – qui n’ont pas mangé de la journée, et offre un peu de chaleur et une oreille attentive aux adolescents en détresse.
« Je veux demeurer actif, et ce, même si je vieillis. Faire du bénévolat me permet d’être dynamique et de faire une différence dans la collectivité. »
