Tia a été élevée dans une famille pauvre et dysfonctionnelle où il y avait très peu de figures paternelles. À 14 ans, elle est chassée de la maison et dort chez des amis. Malheureusement, elle se retrouve rapidement à la rue et sombre dans une spirale infernale. Aujourd’hui âgée de 19 ans, Tia est reconnaissante envers l’Armée du Salut et contente que le pire soit derrière elle.
« Quand on m’a flanquée à la porte, j’avais de mauvaises fréquentations et j’étais accro aux médicaments, raconte Tia. Me droguer me permettait de tout oublier – la famille, la faim, la pauvreté, les conflits et le chaos. Cependant, je n’ai jamais oublié l’Armée du Salut. »
Enfant, Tia se rendait au camp Scotian Glen de l’Armée du Salut. Ses séjours ont laissé une empreinte indélébile sur elle. « Il y avait toujours quelque chose à manger, dit-elle. J’y suis allée pendant cinq ans, soit jusqu’à ce que je sois trop vieille. Au camp, tout était orienté sur le plaisir, la famille et les amis. Je pouvais être une enfant et oublier tous mes soucis. J’ai éprouvé une grande tristesse quand tout cela a pris fin. »
À cette époque, pour répondre aux besoins vestimentaires et alimentaires de sa famille, la mère de Tia avait recours aux services communautaires et d’aide à la famille de l’Armée du Salut de Saint John, au Nouveau-Brunswick. « Je me souviens que nous portions des vêtements usagés et qu’il n’y avait ni pain ni lait à la maison. L’Armée du Salut nous a permis de changer tout cela. »
Quand l’époque des camps a été révolue, Shelly McCready, coordonnatrice des ministères communautaires de l’Armée du Salut, a pressé Tia de garder le contact.
« Elle avait véritablement besoin d’un mentor et d’une influence positive dans sa vie, indique Shelly. Mais les ponts ont été coupés. »
Lorsque Tia a cessé de consommer de la drogue, elle a fait appel à Shelly et à l’Armée du Salut pour obtenir du soutien pour aller à des rendez-vous médicaux et remplir sa déclaration de revenus, ainsi que des encouragements pour poursuivre ses études.
« Je viens de décrocher mon diplôme d’études secondaires. Mon but est de devenir infirmière. Si l’Armée du Salut n’avait pas été là, je dormirais encore chez des amis et ne serais ni indépendante ni en route vers la réussite.
« L’Armée du Salut, c’est la famille que j’ai choisie. Ses membres sont là quand j’ai besoin d’eux. Et je dois avouer que je fais encore appel à eux à l’occasion. Je les aime. »
