« Je veux que les gens sachent qu’ils ne sont pas impuissants face au trouble bipolaire, souligne Harriet, 53 ans. J’ai un solide réseau de soutien dont fait partie l’Armée du Salut. Mais je n’ai pas toujours été en bonne santé et heureuse. »

Il y a seize ans, Harriet s’est rendue au centre de ressources parents-enfants de l’Armée du Salut à Kitchener, en Ontario. « J’étais une mère célibataire qui souffrait de psychose du post‑partum, chez qui un trouble bipolaire a été diagnostiqué et qui n’avait aucune idée du rôle parental, ajoute Harriet. Ma situation n’était pas vraiment bonne. »

Durant sa première visite au centre de ressources, Harriet a eu l’occasion d’entendre ce que les autres parents vivaient et les solutions qu’ils avaient. Cela l’a tellement aidée qu’elle est revenue la semaine suivante.

« Au centre de ressources, j’ai acquis des compétences parentales et culinaires, explique Harriet. Et mon fils Robert a bénéficié de programmes d’apprentissage, notamment à l’aide d’un jeu de construction et de leçons d’alphabétisation à l’intention des jeunes enfants. Mais ce qui m’a le plus aidée, c’est d’avoir quelqu’un à qui parler. Ç’a été formidable pour améliorer mes perspectives et ma motivation. Je crois que je ne serais pas en vie aujourd’hui sans cette écoute ni ce soutien. »

Aujourd’hui, Harriet est intervenante communautaire en nutrition et coordonnatrice du jardin au centre de ressources.

« Lorsque ma santé mentale s’est stabilisée, j’ai voulu rendre quelque chose en échange de ce qu’on m’a donné, conclut Harriet. C’est une façon de rembourser les compétences que j’ai acquises et l’amour que j’ai reçu à l’Armée du Salut.

Je veux que les personnes aux prises avec la maladie mentale sachent qu’il y a de l’espoir. Je devrai toujours lutter contre le trouble bipolaire. Ça ne disparaîtra jamais. À l’Armée du Salut, il y a des gens sur qui je peux compter et qui m’aident à mener une vie saine et productive. Pour cela, je suis éternellement reconnaissante. »
