« Quand tu es issue d’une famille déchirée et dysfonctionnelle, tu ne fais que survivre », précise Shella.

Après son expulsion, Shella avait élaboré un plan pour mettre fin à ses jours. Mais, grâce à un docteur qui veillait au grain et qui avait su évaluer les risques, on l’a admise à l’hôpital pour qu’elle suive un traitement avant de passer à l’acte. Elle est sortie quelques semaines plus tard et a emménagé dans l’établissement d’hébergement temporaire et de services Belinda’s Place de l’Armée du Salut de Newmarket, en Ontario.

« Nos objectifs sont d’accueillir les femmes le plus tôt possible, de leur offrir un soutien global et de les aider à se remettre sur pied », dit Theresa McLeod-Treadwell, directrice des programmes. « Nous n’offrons pas aux femmes sans-abri et à risque de le devenir que de l’hébergement temporaire et d’urgence, nous leur offrons aussi divers services qui incluent une aide concrète, du soutien continu et un suivi. »

Comme Shella habite désormais dans un environnement sécuritaire où tous ses besoins de base sont comblés, elle a vu son état de santé s’améliorer. Elle est maintenant en mesure de se fixer des buts et de profiter des autres services offerts comme l’aide psychologique personnalisée et les programmes de dynamique de la vie.

Shella vit à la résidence Belinda’s Place où elle acquiert les habiletés nécessaires pour être indépendante. Aujourd’hui, ses priorités sont de trouver un logement abordable et permanent, de créer les conditions propices à son épanouissement personnel, et de prendre les mesures nécessaires pour réaliser ses rêves.
