La pauvreté est souvent un phénomène caché au Canada. Cependant, pour Tammy Etto, il aura au contraire été bien visible pendant des années, et la situation de cette femme de 38 ans n’est pas unique.

 

Tammy, mère célibataire de quatre enfants, a vécu sous le seuil de la pauvreté et a dû se débrouiller avec moins de 20 000 $ par année. Avoir un garde-manger vide et des douleurs associées à la faim, dépendre des banques alimentaires, se demander si on parviendra à payer ses factures, tout cela a fait partie de la réalité de Tammy. « C’était difficile pour moi de payer le loyer et la facture d’électricité, et d’acheter la nourriture; j’avais l’impression d’avoir échoué dans mon rôle de mère, confie Tammy. Certains jours, j’ignorais comment j’arriverais à mettre de la nourriture sur la table. Il y a donc eu des occasions où je me suis passée de nourriture afin que mes enfants n’aient pas à le faire. »

 

Désespérée, le ventre creux et incapable de mettre des cadeaux sous l’arbre de Noël, elle a décidé de se tourner vers l’Armée du Salut, qui lui a offert son soutien. Tammy a ainsi trouvé l’aide, la force et le salut nécessaires pour combattre ses problèmes quotidiens. « Sans l’Armée du Salut, nous serions aujourd’hui affamés et mes enfants n’auraient rien eu pour Noël », précise-t-elle.

 

Noël est souvent une fête bien triste pour les personnes touchées par la pauvreté. Le temps des Fêtes est souvent une période idéalisée dans l’imaginaire collectif, mais la réalité, bien qu’elle ne soit pas toujours facile à voir, c’est que pour les familles canadiennes défavorisées, il n’y a pas vraiment de magie de Noël.  

 

« L’Armée du Salut a été comme une oasis pour ma famille. Sans cette organisation, les choses n’iraient pas si bien pour nous aujourd’hui », indique Tammy. Elle affirme que c’est grâce à l’Armée qu’elle a maintenant une certaine stabilité et est en mesure de reprendre sa vie en main. Plus important encore pour Tammy, l’Armée a non seulement offert des paniers de Noël et des jouets aux membres de sa famille lorsqu’ils n’avaient rien à mettre sous le sapin, mais elle leur a aussi redonné l’espoir.

 

Il y a à peine deux mois, Tammy et ses deux plus jeunes enfants, âgés de 7 et 13 ans, devaient se débrouiller pour joindre les deux bouts avec un revenu de l’aide sociale de 1 500 $ par mois – la moitié du montant était uniquement consacré au loyer – et en s’appuyant régulièrement sur l’Armée du Salut pour l’aide alimentaire. Aujourd’hui, Tammy travaille à temps plein pour l’entreprise MSU à Mississauga. En outre, grâce au soutien de l’Armée, elle étudie en travail social au collège Seneca, afin de pouvoir, un jour, aider d’autres personnes de la même façon qu’on lui est venu en aide.

 

« Il y a eu beaucoup de larmes, mais aujourd’hui, je souris enfin! », s’exclame Tammy. Reconnaissante, elle s’implique maintenant dans la campagne nationale des marmites de Noël, lancée le 19 novembre. Elle continue aussi à faire du bénévolat toutes les semaines pour un programme parascolaire; elle prépare des repas nutritifs pour 20 à 30 enfants à l’église communautaire Lakeshore de l’Armée du Salut. « Je m’efforce d’offrir de l’excellente nourriture aux enfants. Peut-être même que pour certains d’entre eux, ce sera le seul repas qu’ils prendront dans la journée. »

 

La famille de Tammy n’est que l’une des nombreuses familles à qui l’Armée du Salut vient en aide chaque année. Ce soutien n’est d’ailleurs pas seulement offert à Noël, mais toute l’année. En effet, il ne faut pas oublier que beaucoup de personnes doivent quotidiennement livrer un combat difficile contre la pauvreté. L’an dernier, l’Armée du Salut a aidé plus de 1,7 million de personnes issues de 400 collectivités canadiennes. Elle a servi 3,2 millions de repas gratuits, fourni 7 300 lits d’urgence dans des refuges, et fait don de paniers de Noël et de jouets à 269 000 personnes.


« Nous vivons dans l’un des pays les plus riches au monde, mais il y a malgré tout un Canadien sur sept qui vit dans la pauvreté, rappelle John McAlister, directeur national des communications pour l’Armée du Salut. La pauvreté est souvent invisible; elle se cache au sein de familles à faible revenu qui peinent à payer leur loyer, à manger à leur faim et à payer les factures d’électricité, les médicaments ou à subvenir à leurs besoins de base.

Beaucoup de gens cumulent plus d’un emploi peu rémunéré, mais vivent sous le seuil de la pauvreté », poursuit-il. D’ailleurs, selon Statistique Canada, au moins 4,8 millions de Canadiens vivent dans la précarité.

Pour venir en aide aux personnes dans le besoin, l’Armée du Salut tient cette année sa 128e campagne nationale des marmites de Noël. Plus de 2 000 marmites sont installées partout au Canada. « Nous comptons sur cette campagne, dont l’objectif est de recueillir 21 millions de dollars à l’échelle nationale, pour offrir de la nourriture, des vêtements, un toit et de l’espoir aux personnes défavorisées des différentes collectivités », explique John McAlister.

Cette année, les gens peuvent faire des dons par l’intermédiaire de leur appareil mobile ou de leur ordinateur en visitant l’adresse FilltheKettle.com/fr, un site Web mobile de l’Armée du Salut. Un code QR sera fourni aux emplacements physiques où l’on trouve une marmite, ce qui facilitera la vie des personnes qui souhaitent effectuer un don sur le site Web mobile. Celui-ci permettra aussi à ceux qui le désirent d’avoir leur propre marmite en ligne et d’encourager les membres de leur famille, leurs amis, leurs voisins ou leurs collègues à faire un don à l’Armée du Salut.
