Au Canada, un enfant sur sept vit dans la pauvreté. Par conséquent, chaque année, des milliers d’enfants vont au lit la veille de Noël en ne sachant pas s’ils trouveront des présents sous le sapin, au matin.
« Chaque enfant mérite d’avoir un cadeau sous l’arbre de Noël, déclare le major Les Marshall, secrétaire territorial des relations publiques et du développement. L’Armée du Salut collabore avec des partenaires communautaires afin de s’assurer que tous les enfants connaîtront la magie de Noël. »
L’an dernier, quelque 85 000 enfants canadiens ont reçu des jouets de l’Armée du Salut pour Noël. Un grand nombre de particuliers et d’organismes communautaires organisent des collectes de jouets que des employés et des bénévoles de l’Armée du Salut distribuent aux familles admissibles à l’aide de Noël.
« Sans le soutien de nos partenaires et de nos amis, nous ne serions pas en mesure d’offrir des jouets à une si grande échelle, ajoute le major Marshall. Nous sommes profondément reconnaissants à tous ceux qui nous ont aidés à mettre un sourire sur le visage des enfants démunis, le matin de Noël. »
D’innombrables collectes de jouets ont lieu dans tout le Canada. Voici un aperçu du travail accompli par l’Armée du Salut et ses partenaires.
À Carbonear (T.-N.-et-L.), l’Armée du Salut, de concert avec TC Square Mall et KIXX Country FM, a organisé sa collecte de jouets annuelle Toy Tree, grâce à laquelle entre 1000 et 1200 jouets seront distribués aux enfants de la région, cette année.
À Halifax (N.-É.), Cineplex Dartmouth Crossing et Cineplex Bayers Lake parrainent des collectes de jouets. L’an dernier, 11 640 enfants des Maritimes ont reçu des jouets de l’Armée du Salut.
À Kingston (Ont.), les stations de radio Bell Media (98.3 FLY FM / 98.9 THE DRIVE) s’associent cette année encore avec l’Armée du Salut. Grâce à cette initiative, des cartes-cadeaux et des jouets seront remis à plus de 2 700 enfants de la collectivité.
La période des Fêtes est l’occasion idéale de redonner à la collectivité un peu de ce que nous avons reçu, et de ne pas oublier les démunis. Un grand nombre de familles n’ont pas les moyens d’offrir des cadeaux de Noël à leurs enfants. Le soutien qu’elles recevront pendant ces moments difficiles contribuera à leur donner l’espoir d’un avenir meilleur.
