Regent Park est l’un des quartiers de Toronto où le taux de pauvreté infantile est le plus élevé. Pour donner aux enfants un coup de pouce et les aider à échapper à leur milieu familial, l’Armée du Salut leur propose un camp durant la semaine de relâche. Pendant une fin de semaine, les jeunes peuvent s’amuser en toute sécurité dans un environnement inclusif.
« Depuis 2005, l’Armée du Salut à Regent Park organise des camps pendant la semaine de relâche, explique Brianne Zelinsky, coordonnatrice des œuvres de jeunesse. Chaque année, pendant deux jours, nous amenons des jeunes de notre programme de garde parascolaire au camp de Jackson’s Point, situé sur le bord du lac Simcoe, où ils peuvent profiter du plein air, bien manger et s’amuser. »
Selon Mme Zelinsky, un grand nombre de ces jeunes sont issus de familles aux prises avec des problèmes de pauvreté intergénérationnelle, de criminalité et de toxicomanie, qui vivent souvent dans des logements insalubres et surpeuplés et comptent sur l’aide du gouvernement et les services sociaux de l’Armée du Salut pour combler leurs besoins essentiels.
Depuis 1904, l’Armée du Salut offre aux résidants de Regent Park une gamme de services : programme de repas, banque alimentaire, paniers de nourriture, clubs parascolaires et camps durant la semaine de relâche.
« Les enfants qui vivent dans la pauvreté ont un lourd fardeau à porter et sont poussés à grandir vite, déclare Mme Zelinsky. Nous nous assurons qu’au camp, ils ont la possibilité de jouer, de se défouler et d’avoir du plaisir. Pour les participants et les dirigeants, c’est comme des vacances en famille. »
Au camp, les activités ne manquent pas : artisanat, glissade sur chambre à air, randonnée pédestre, cinéma et combats d’oreiller. Les enfants prennent des repas chauds et sains, ce qui n’est pas toujours le cas à la maison.
« Pour de nombreux résidants de Regent Park, la vie est un combat quotidien, dit Mme Zelinsky. Nous voulons que le camp soit une expérience rafraîchissante et inoubliable, et que les enfants sachent qu’ils peuvent compter sur un réseau de personnes qui ont à cœur leur bien-être, et que Dieu les aime. Cela est important pour nous. »
