L’idée de vacances estivales—une semaine passée loin de l’agitation urbaine—peut sembler un rêve lointain pour les familles dans le besoin, et en particulier pour les mères de jeunes enfants.

Parmi les différents camps d’été offerts par l’Armée du Salut, celui à l’intention des mamans et des enfants est unique. En effet, ce séjour au camp pour les mamans et leurs enfants d’un à six ans constitue une extraordinaire parenthèse de détente et une occasion de tisser des liens familiaux.

Les mères participent à des activités avec leurs enfants, mais certains programmes sont offerts spécialement pour chacun des groupes. Le jour, on peut se baigner, faire des travaux de bricolage ou tout simplement participer à des jeux. En soirée, on chante autour d’un feu de camp. Lorsque les enfants sont couchés, c’est au tour des mères de se divertir: coiffure, manucure, film ou séances de Zumba.

Heidi MacPherson, de Truro (Nouvelle-Écosse), en est à sa troisième participation au camp des mamans et des enfants. Pour elle et sa fille de trois ans, Bailey, le camp est le moment fort de l’été.

“J’ai toujours hâte d’aller au camp car je peux sortir de mon quotidien et m’amuser, dit Heidi. C’est très inspirant d’entendre les autres mères raconter leurs expériences et la façon dont elles agissent chaque jour avec leurs enfants et gèrent les situations difficiles. C’est un endroit pour se détendre et se ressourcer.”

“J’ai toujours du plaisir, et je ne m’ennuie jamais ici.”

Heidi raconte que pour sa fille Bailey, l’excitation commence par de petites choses—par exemple d’être maintenant en mesure cette année de dormir dans un lit superposé—et se poursuit avec ses activités préférées, notamment les feux de camp et les pique-niques.

“Bailey adore le camp, raconte Heidi. Elle est très sociable et se fait facilement des amis. Dès que nous arrivons, elle court vers les autres enfants. Elle aime beaucoup passer du temps avec eux et faire du bricolage.”

La majorité des participantes au camp des mamans et des enfants viennent de centres urbains des Maritimes, et un grand nombre d’entre elles sont des parents uniques. Selon la major Vi Barrow de l’Armée du Salut, le camp des mamans et des enfants offre à ces femmes occupées, qui ont souvent très peu de temps à consacrer à elles-mêmes, une expérience de vacances.

“Certaines de ces mères n’ont jamais l’occasion de prendre des vacances, explique la major Barrow. Le camp est spécialement adapté à leurs besoins et à ceux de leurs enfants. Il n’y a rien comme sortir de la ville, profiter du grand air et participer à des activités sans avoir à se préoccuper de la logistique.”

Même s’il ne s’agit que d’une semaine par année, Heidi et la major Barrow estiment que ce court séjour au camp, pendant lequel les femmes tissent des liens entre elles et sont dorlotées par le personnel, a une incidence bénéfique lorsqu’elles rentrent à la maison.

“C’est un milieu sûr et convivial, ajoute la major Barrow, et nous espérons que grâce aux activités concrètes que nous organisons, les participantes prendront conscience de l’amour inconditionnel de Dieu à leur égard.”
