Je suis reconnaissant à tous ceux qui me sont venus en aide. »

La blessure d’abandon

Un jour, en revenant de l’école, Cory a appris que sa mère avait quitté le foyer, laissant derrière elle son mari, sa fille et son fils. Cory, qui avait 14 ans à l’époque, a fait semblant de ne pas être dérangé par ce départ. Mais à l’intérieur de lui, il était déchiré par la confusion, la colère et la souffrance.

« Ma mère était partie avec toutes ses affaires, dit Cory, et je n’avais pas prévu le coup. »

Après quelque temps, Cory a cru que l’alcool et les drogues lui apporteraient du réconfort. Vers l’âge de 16 ans, il avait développé une dépendance, quitté l’école et était pris au piège dans une spirale d’autodestruction et de désespoir.

« Mon cerveau était en désordre. Puis on m’a diagnostiqué une maladie mentale, raconte Cory. J’étais instable, j’avais des emplois sans avenir et j’ai sombré dans une profonde dépression. Pendant des années, j’ai été une personne brisée. »

L’envie d’en finir

Affligé d’une détresse extrême, Cory n’arrivait plus à vivre. Un soir, il s’est tranché la gorge. Son colocataire l’a trouvé et a demandé une ambulance. Il a passé deux semaines à l’hôpital et sa blessure au cou a nécessité 100 points de suture.

« J’ai frôlé la mort, avoue Cory. C’est à ce moment que j’ai décidé de changer mon mode de vie. »

Au Centre of Hope, dans le cadre du programme de traitement des dépendances L’Ancrage, Cory a trouvé un refuge, a reçu du counseling et participé à des programmes axés sur l’abstinence, comme le développement de stratégies d’adaptation et la détermination de problèmes.

« Les jours où je ne pouvais pas participer au programme, les intervenants de l’Armée du Salut m’ont encouragé à continuer, dit Cory. Ensemble, nous avons élaboré un plan qui me permettrait d’aller de l’avant. »

En septembre 2017, Cory a terminé avec succès le programme de réadaptation d’une durée de six mois, offert en établissement. Il est actuellement inscrit à un programme d’apprenti briqueteur, et est fiancé.

« L’Armée du Salut m’a montré à croire à nouveau en moi, explique Cory. Sans elle, je ne serais pas ici aujourd’hui. »
