La Semaine de la sécurité civile, qui a lieu du 1er au 7 mai, est une occasion pour les Canadiens de se préparer à affronter toute situation d’urgence qui pourrait survenir. Les désastres naturels, les pandémies, les cyberattaques et le terrorisme sont tous susceptibles de provoquer des urgences. Bien que le personnel d’intervention, comme celui de l’Armée du Salut, se prépare en participant à des ateliers de formation, nous avons tous le devoir de nous préparer en prévision d’une menace ou d’un danger.

« Il ne faut qu’une vingtaine de 20 minutes pour établir un plan pour votre famille », précise le major Rick Shirran, directeur des services d’urgence et d’aide aux sinistrés de l’Armée du Salut. « On ne sait jamais quand une catastrophe peut frapper. Mais nous pouvons tous nous y préparer. »

En tant qu’un des principaux organismes d’aide en situation d’urgence du pays, l’Armée du Salut se voit confier un certain nombre de rôles par la sécurité civile dont, prodiguer des soins psychologiques et spirituels, exploiter des centres d’hébergement d’urgence et offrir de la nourriture et des vêtements. L’année dernière, dans le cadre des phases d’intervention et de rétablissement, l’Armée a aidé 9 800 Canadiens lors de catastrophes.

À l’occasion de la Semaine de la sécurité civile, de nombreuses équipes d’intervention d’urgence et unités d’intervention communautaire (UIC) de l’Armée du Salut participeront à divers événements dans le but d’inciter les Canadiens à élaborer un plan d’urgence et à se préparer en cas de catastrophe.
