Malgré les défis auxquels ils font face, les jeunes à risque peuvent surmonter de nombreux obstacles grâce à une bonne dose de soutien affectif, d’amitié et d’écoute. Chaque jour, après l’école, le centre de jeunesse de l’Armée du Salut, à Pembroke (Ontario) offre des programmes qui suscitent chez des jeunes de 12 à 18 ans un sentiment d’appartenance et une motivation à réussir dans la vie.

« Je vais au centre tous les jours de la semaine, raconte Kassandra, âgée de 16 ans. J’ai subi de l’intimidation pendant une bonne partie de ma vie et le personnel de l’Armée du Salut m’a aidée à regagner ma confiance. J’avais quitté l’école en raison de la façon dont j’étais traitée. J’y suis retourné. Sans le programme, je ne sais pas où j’irais pour socialiser. Je m’attirerais sans doute des ennuis quelque part. »

Au centre, les jeunes reçoivent un accueil chaleureux. Ils ne sont pas jugés, reçoivent les services d’un mentor, se font des amis et participent à diverses activités : atelier de cuisine, musique, camping et voyages de mission.

« Le centre, c’est la meilleure chose qui me soit arrivée, avoue Tyler. J’ai acquis des aptitudes sociales et appris à jouer de la guitare, ce qui m’a aidé à accroître ma confiance en moi. J’étais très timide, et maintenant je peux monter sur une scène et chanter. J’ai pris conscience du problème de la pauvreté et appris à travailler auprès des démunis. Le centre a été un facteur déterminant dans ma décision d’étudier en service social à l’université. »

Une grande partie des jeunes sont issus de familles à faible revenu, de familles d’accueil, ou encore n’ont aucun sentiment d’appartenance.

« De bonnes relations et un endroit convivial où on peut se détendre peuvent changer le cours d’une vie, déclare Amanda Wilson, directrice du programme. Sans ce programme, de nombreux enfants ne sortiraient pas de leur chambre ou causeraient des problèmes dans les rues. »
