L’Action de grâce est un temps de célébration et de réjouissance, sauf pour les quatre millions de Canadiens qui ne savent pas d’où viendra l’argent pour leur prochain repas.

D’un océan à l’autre, l’Armée du Salut déploie des efforts pour que tous puissent avoir quelque chose à manger lors de cette fête, que ce soit des aliments sains obtenus par le truchement d’une banque alimentaire ou un délicieux repas d’Action de grâce servi dans l’un de ses centres. L’Armée espère sincèrement que personne n’ira se coucher affamé ce soir-là.

« L’Armée du Salut cherche à s’assurer que les gagne-petit, les personnes âgées ayant un revenu fixe et les sans-abri profitent de cette journée empreinte de traditions », dit le major Les Marshall, secrétaire territorial des relations publiques et du développement.

L’année dernière, nous avons servi plus de 3,2 millions de repas dans nos refuges et grâce à nos programmes d’aide alimentaire au Canada.

L’Armée du Salut de Vancouver était là quand Take en a eu le plus besoin. Cet ancien mécanicien a vécu le rêve canadien jusqu’à ce qu’il se blesse au dos à la suite d’un accident de ski. C’est en 2014 que l’argent pour payer le loyer et les factures d’électricité vinrent à manquer.

« À mon arrivée au refuge de l’Armée du Salut, j’avais tout perdu, voiture, argent, travail, raconte Take. Je n’avais pas de famille au Canada et je broyais du noir. Je m’interrogeais souvent sur la pertinence de vivre. »

« Je ne peux pas vous expliquer le soulagement que j’ai ressenti quand je me suis retrouvé au chaud avec un toit au-dessus de ma tête et un lit pour dormir, précise Take. Mon premier repas a été un bol de soupe fumante. J’aurais pleuré. »

« L’Armée du Salut m’a redonné de l’espoir », dit-il. Maintenant, Take agit comme bénévole et sert des repas au centre qui l’a accueilli et lui a sauvé la vie.
