Enfant, Tia se rendait au camp Scotian Glen de l’Armée du Salut. Ses séjours ont laissé une empreinte indélébile sur elle. « Il y avait toujours quelque chose à manger, dit-elle. J’y suis allée pendant cinq ans, soit jusqu’à ce que je sois trop vieille. Au camp, tout était orienté sur le plaisir, la famille et les amis. Je pouvais être une enfant et oublier tous mes soucis. J’ai éprouvé une grande tristesse quand tout cela a pris fin. »

À cette époque, pour répondre aux besoins vestimentaires et alimentaires de sa famille, la mère de Tia avait recours aux services communautaires et d’aide à la famille de l’Armée du Salut de Saint John, au Nouveau-Brunswick. « Je me souviens que nous portions des vêtements usagés et qu’il n’y avait ni pain ni lait à la maison. L’Armée du Salut nous a permis de changer tout cela. »

Quand l’époque des camps a été révolue, Shelly McCready, coordonnatrice des ministères communautaires de l’Armée du Salut, a pressé Tia de garder le contact.

« Elle avait véritablement besoin d’un mentor et d’une influence positive dans sa vie, indique Shelly. Mais les ponts ont été coupés. »
