Un voisin m’a suggéré de prendre contact avec l’Armée du Salut à Oshawa (Ontario). J’ai été ému par la gentillesse et la compassion qu’ils ont eues à mon égard. Les funérailles de Fern ont eu lieu là, et au cours des mois qui ont suivi, mes interactions avec les membres de la congrégation m’ont incité à me mettre au service des autres. »
Ted trie et distribue des denrées alimentaires dans une banque alimentaire de l’Armée du Salut et, pendant le temps des fêtes, prépare des paniers de Noël, trie des jouets et est préposé dans le cadre de la campagne des marmites de Noël, dont les fonds servent à donner de l’espoir aux personnes et aux familles démunies de la collectivité.
« Pendant des années, j’ai travaillé bénévolement comme trésorier pour plusieurs organismes communautaires, explique Ted. Mais le bénévolat à l’Armée du Salut, c’est différent. Vous êtes en première ligne et prenez conscience des besoins qui existent. Vous rencontrez des gens qui vivent dans la précarité et leur apportez de l’aide. Cela me procure une grande satisfaction. »

« Il y avait également un homme qui, après avoir été victime d’un incendie, a reçu des vêtements et de la nourriture de l’Armée du Salut, un geste qu’il n’oubliera jamais. »
