Mais même s’il a purgé une peine horrible et a dû faire face à d’énormes difficultés, de nouvelles portes se sont ouvertes à lui et il a trouvé la paix grâce à l’Armée du Salut.

« La présence de l’Église évangélique en Érythrée a été interdite par le gouvernement, mentionne Mengsteab. Seuls les membres des Églises autorisées par le gouvernement peuvent se rassembler en public; il est illégal pour les gens d’autres confessions de le faire. Donc, chaque fois que nous nous rassemblions, nous risquions d’être arrêtés, persécutés et emprisonnés. »

Mengsteab, qui a grandi dans une famille pentecôtiste, était étudiant lorsque le gouvernement a découvert qu’il participait clandestinement à des rencontres de prière à l’extérieur de son campus.

« J’ai été incarcéré pendant un an, indique Mengsteab. Cette expérience m’a laissé beaucoup de cicatrices… »

Une fois libéré, il a terminé ses études et obtenu son diplôme en biologie. Il a par la suite travaillé durant quelques années, avant de voir sa vie menacée d’être bouleversée à nouveau.

Peur et souffrance
« J’ai reçu un appel pour me prévenir que des gens étaient à notre recherche pour nous arrêter, moi et mes amis qui faisions partie de groupes de prière. J’ai donc fui au Soudan, explique Mengsteab. Je ne pouvais pas retourner chez moi, et je trouvais cela très difficile. »

Pendant trois mois, Mengsteab a vécu dans un camp de réfugiés où il n’y avait pas assez de nourriture pour tout le monde et très peu de médicaments. Des gens mourraient donc tous les jours de diverses maladies.

« Là-bas, j’ai failli mourir en raison des conditions sanitaires affreuses et du manque de nourriture, témoigne Mengsteab. Je n’aime pas repenser à cela, car je sais qu’il y a encore des gens qui s’y trouvent et qui continuent de souffrir. »

Il a fini par trouver son frère au Soudan, et il a quitté le camp pour aller vivre avec lui. Il a profité de l’occasion pour commencer à faire des recherches en vue de s’établir dans un pays sûr. Pendant ce temps, il a travaillé comme interprète et animateur dans le cadre du programme Orientation canadienne à l’étranger, qui aide les migrants détenant un visa à s’installer au Canada.

Services d’établissement
« Je me suis établi à Winnipeg en 2018, révèle Mengsteab. J’ai rapidement entendu parler du LEEP
(Life and Employability Enhancement Program), un programme de formation professionnelle offert par le Multicultural Family Centre de l’Armée du Salut. »

Le LEEP est un programme préparatoire à l’emploi destiné aux jeunes immigrants qui proviennent de pays en guerre. Il permet aux participants d’en apprendre davantage sur la culture canadienne et d’acquérir un vaste éventail de compétences notamment associées à l’informatique, à la préparation à l’entrevue d’embauche et à la rédaction de curriculum vitæ. L’objectif du programme est de faire en sorte que chaque participant se trouve un emploi à la fin de la formation.

« L’Armée du Salut m’a aidé à m’enraciner dans mon nouveau pays, mentionne Mengsteab. En plus de m’avoir permis de rétablir mon estime de soi et de reprendre confiance en mes moyens, elle m’a permis d’améliorer mon employabilité. »

Mengsteab est aujourd’hui instructeur pour le programme LEEP, et il a des objectifs bien précis concernant son avenir.

« Je veux poursuivre mes études et devenir technicien en ultrasons ou infirmier, dit-il. Voilà ce qui occupe mes pensées — cela, et une vie sans peur et sans répression ».
