Chaque jour, 5 000 enfants meurent de maladies transmises par l’eau avant leur cinquième anniversaire. À l’échelle mondiale, une personne sur 10 vit sans ;eau potable.

La Journée mondiale de l’eau (le 22 mars) est une occasion d’en apprendre plus sur les problèmes liés à l’eau, d’en parler avec d’autres et de prendre des mesures pour changer les choses.

Fournir de l’eau potable aux populations les plus pauvres et les plus vulnérables dans les pays en développement est un moyen par lequel l’Armée du Salut améliore les vies. Par exemple, à Dilzawl, petit village dans l’est de l’Inde, l’Armée du Salut a récemment collaboré avec des experts locaux et des membres de la collectivité pour la construction d’une citerne d’une capacité de 10 000 litres pour la captation de l’eau et sa distribution.

« Avant de disposer d’une citerne, nous buvions l’eau d’un petit ruisseau sale », confie Nguri, dirigeant du village. « Notre collectivité, surtout les petits enfants, était atteinte de maladies transmises par l’eau, comme la malaria et la diarrhée. »

À Dilzawl, la majorité des gens vit dans des habitations dont le toit est en bambou. On peut se rendre à ce village seulement par bateau : le trajet dure deux heures. La pénurie d’eau constituait un problème, et la situation sanitaire était très mauvaise.

« À Dilzawl, l’accès à l’eau potable a réduit de 50 % le nombre de cas de malaria et de jaunisse. Les villageois assument la responsabilité des réparations et des rénovations du système d’approvisionnement en eau, et la santé de toute la collectivité s’améliore. »
