Sans crier gare, Judy est passée de comptable accomplie à comateuse.
« Je travaillais comme bénévole quand j’ai été atteinte d’une rupture d’anévrisme cérébral », dit Judy. Conduite à l’hôpital en toute hâte, elle a été opérée sur le champ pour réduire la pression et le saignement. Sa famille a alors été appelée à son chevet pour lui faire ses adieux.
À son réveil, trois semaines plus tard, Judy a des troubles de vision causés par des dommages aux yeux, est attachée à sa chaise pour ne pas tomber, et est incapable de se souvenir du nom des infirmières. À partir de ce moment, sa vie ne sera plus jamais la même.
« Avec le temps, ma vision s’est améliorée, mais j’avais toujours des problèmes de mémoire à court terme, raconte Judy. Je suis retournée travailler, mais j’étais incapable de me rappeler ce qu’on m’avait appris la veille. J’ai perdu trois emplois et j’ai déclaré faillite. »
Judy a habité chez sa mère pendant quelques années, mais quand les problèmes de démence de cette dernière ont empiré, le condo a été vendu pour payer les soins dans un centre d’hébergement de longue durée.
« Pendant des mois, j’ai passé la nuit sur le canapé d’un parent ou d’un ami. Une fois toutes mes ressources épuisées, j’ai dormi dans la voiture de ma mère. Rien n’allait plus pour moi. Dans un état suicidaire, j’ai composé le 911 », témoigne Judy.
À l’hôpital, elle a reçu l’aide nécessaire pour se sentir mieux. Le personnel lui a même trouvé un lit dans un refuge. Éventuellement, elle a été admise au centre d’hébergement de transition de l’Armée du Salut du centre-ville de Toronto.
« À l’Armée du Salut on m’a littéralement ramenée à la vie », nous livre Judy. « Grâce à leur programme, j’ai dormi dans un lit chaud et douillet chaque soir, noué des amitiés qui m’ont donné un sens d’appartenance, et regagné ma confiance en moi grâce aux encouragements reçus. À l’heure où je faisais le deuil de mon passé, l’Armée du Salut était là pour me rappeler que j’avais encore beaucoup de choses à donner. »
Dix années se sont écoulées depuis cet incident, et Judy n’a jamais retrouvé la mémoire à court terme. Elle ne peut donc pas travailler. Toutefois, elle est devenue une bénévole indispensable pour l’Armée du Salut, et vit sa passion d’aider les autres.
« Je tiens à reconnaitre le bon travail de cette organisation, dit Judy. Ce qui m’est arrivé n’était pas prévu, mais l’Armée m’a permis de rebondir. Elle est là pour ça, il suffit de tendre la main. »
