À Moncton, au Nouveau-Brunswick, le programme Keenagers de l’Armée du Salut permet à un groupe d’hommes et de femmes enthousiastes de se rencontrer pour faire des sorties, se divertir et discuter de tout et de rien. Tous les mois, des personnes de 55 ans et plus se réunissent pour avoir des relations de camaraderie, bavarder et s’amuser.

Une fois à la retraite, de nombreux aînés font face au syndrome du nid vide, ou encore se sentent seuls et en retrait de la collectivité. En outre, des contraintes financières, des problèmes de mobilité et de transport peuvent également les empêcher de participer à des activités communautaires.

« Parfois, le seul fait de ne pas être au courant des ressources mises à leur disposition et des activités qui leur sont proposées font en sorte que les aînés n’arrivent pas à nouer des relations », explique Natasha Burkett, directrice des services communautaires et d’aide à la famille.

Mis sur pied il y a huit ans, le programme Keenagers permet aux aînés de participer à des activités récréatives et sociales, d’assister à des conférences, de faire des sorties de groupe et d’acquérir de nouvelles compétences. De plus, des services de soutien et de défense des droits des aînés sont offerts.

En février dernier, les participants ont célébré la Saint-Valentin en faisant de la pâtisserie dans le cadre d’une cuisine communautaire.

Ce type de programme favorise un sentiment d’appartenance et de camaraderie, et comble les besoins sociaux et spirituels des jeunes de cœur. « Nous voulons joindre les aînés et promouvoir un mode de vie sain, l’inclusion sociale et le divertissement », dit Mme Burkett.
