La colère est une émotion normale, mais malsaine quand elle devient incontrôlable. Le programme de gestion de la colère Red Cap de l’Armée du Salut aide des jeunes à comprendre ce qui déclenche leur colère et à élaborer des stratégies pour la maîtriser et faire face à diverses situations contrariantes.

« Il est urgent de comprendre pourquoi les enfants sont en colère et ce qu’on peut faire pour y remédier », déclare Tammy Smallwood, coordonnatrice du programme de gestion de la colère Red Cap de l’Armée du Salut à Scarborough, en Ontario.

Le programme Red Cap est destiné aux jeunes de 8 à 12 ans, et vise à amener ces derniers à se maîtriser instantanément et à composer avec leur colère de manière constructive. Des exercices comme compter à rebours à partir de 10 ou prendre trois grandes respirations peuvent les aider à se calmer et à mieux réagir.

« Si nous n’aidons pas les enfants à gérer leur colère, la situation s’aggravera, signale Tammy. Le programme Red Cap aide les participants à déterminer la source de leur colère et leur fournit des outils qui les aideront à briser le cercle de la négativité. »

Tammy raconte qu’elle a travaillé auprès d’enfants dont la colère s’est intensifiée parce qu’on leur disait qu’ils étaient laids, qu’on se moquait d’eux à cause de leurs lunettes ou qu’on les méprisait en raison de leur difficulté dans certaines matières à l’école.

« Les problèmes commencent à surgir lorsqu’on ne gère pas adéquatement sa colère, souligne Tammy. Une faible capacité d’adaptation peut entraîner des comportements destructeurs comme le vandalisme, l’automutilation et la violence. »

« Beaucoup d’enfants ne savent pas comment faire face à la négativité et ont donc recours à la force physique. Le programme Red Cap leur enseigne à résister aux mauvaises influences qu’ils ne manqueront pas de subir. »
