Lorsque Pei Pei a découvert qu’elle était enceinte de jumeaux, elle était ravie. Cependant, en apprenant la nouvelle, son ami a déclaré qu’il ne voulait pas d’une telle responsabilité et lui a demandé de se faire avorter. Quand Pei Pei a refusé, il l’a quittée.

“Je rêvais de vivre avec un homme qui m’aimerait et aimerait nos enfants, raconte Pei Pei, 25 ans, et non d’un homme qui m’en voudrait d’être enceinte.”

Il y a cinq ans, Pei Pei, qui vivait en Chine, est venue au Canada afin de poursuivre des études en comptabilité. Lorsqu’elle a appris qu’elle était enceinte, elle a su qu’elle ne pourrait pas retourner dans son pays d’origine.

“Les mères célibataires sont toujours un sujet tabou et honteux en Chine ” explique, Pei Pei.

Triste, seule et sans espoir, Pei Pei s’est enfermée dans sa chambre, et ne parlait à personne. Cependant, au milieu de cette période d’incertitude et de crainte, elle était déterminée à prendre soin de la santé de ses enfants à naître.

Pendant une visite prénatale à l’hôpital, une travailleuse sociale a parlé à Pei Pei du centre Bethany Hope de l’Armée du Salut, à Ottawa, un centre multiservices pour les jeunes parents et leurs enfants.

“Le centre Bethany m’a aidée à vivre ma grossesse. J’y ai appris à préparer des repas sains et à être une bonne mère. Leur programme Parent Enterprise m’a procuré des connaissances et du réconfort qui ont changé ma vie.”

“Le programme Parent Enterprise offre aux parents une vaste gamme de choix en matière d’éducation et d’emploi, explique Shawna Norman, coordonnatrice du programme. Ils acquièrent des compétences dans de nombreux domaines : travail en équipe, gestion du temps, préparation d’un budget, recyclage de vieux objets, etc.”

“Avant, je doutais de mes capacités et j’étais déprimée. Maintenant, j’ai confiance en moi. Je suis heureuse et confiante.”
