Le 8 mars, la Journée internationale de la femme célèbre les réalisations des femmes à travers le monde et les initiatives qui sont mises en œuvre pour contribuer à leur avancement.

Chaque jour, au Canada et ailleurs dans le monde, l’Armée du Salut s’efforce d’aider les femmes à se préparer un avenir radieux, sécuritaire et gratifiant. Pour ce faire, elle offre des services qui habilitent des femmes vulnérables et célèbrent leurs réalisations.

Par exemple, le Centre Bethany Hope de l’Armée du Salut, à Ottawa, a donné à Jenessa de meilleures chances de réussir grâce à son programme d’apprentissage individualisé.

« J’ai terminé mon secondaire, raconte Jenessa. J’ai confiance en moi maintenant, ce qui n’aurait pas été possible sans l’Armée du Salut. »

Laura a trouvé sécurité et soutien à la résidence Evangeline de l’Armée du Salut, à Toronto, après avoir été victime de violence familiale. Aujourd’hui, elle étudie pour obtenir un certificat en counseling familial et veut aider d’autres femmes.

À Cornerbrook (T.-N.-L.), grâce à un nouveau programme de l’Armée du Salut à l’intention des mamans, Patricia a pu apprendre à gérer son stress et ses finances après avoir rencontré des difficultés financières imprévues.

L’Armée du Salut est à l’œuvre dans 126 pays. Elle collabore avec les collectivités locales dans le but d’améliorer la santé et la situation financière des personnes vulnérables, plus particulièrement dans les pays en voie de développement.

« Dans les pays en voie de développement, les femmes rencontrent une multitude d’obstacles.  L’Armée du Salut les aide à acquérir la persévérance et la force nécessaires pour les surmonter », explique la major Gillian Brown, directrice des Missions mondiales.

L’Armée du Salut au Canada travaille en partenariat avec le territoire des Antilles dans le but de venir en aide aux victimes du séisme qui a dévasté Haïti, en janvier 2010. On a donné aux filles les mêmes possibilités qu’aux garçons en matière de formation professionnelle, et aujourd’hui, de jeunes plombières entament un nouveau chapitre de leur vie.

Améliorer la santé des mères et de leurs enfants constitue une priorité pour l’Armée du Salut. Chaque année, près de 4 000 bébés naissent dans les deux hôpitaux de l’Armée du Salut au Zimbabwe. Les risques liés à l’enfantement sont élevés dans les pays africains. Cependant, les hôpitaux Tshelenyamba et Howard sont reconnus pour l’excellence des soins qu’ils prodiguent et qui améliorent le taux de réussite lors des accouchements. Ce succès est attribué au suivi effectué auprès des femmes tout au long de leur grossesse.

« La Journée internationale de la femme n’est pas seulement une occasion de réfléchir sur les progrès réalisés, mais également de reconnaître le courage et la détermination manifestés par des femmes qui veulent tout simplement améliorer leur vie et celle des gens qui les entourent », déclare la major Gillian Brown.
